Calvin opens in style

The CCIW and MIAA are among the last leagues to get underway, but they tipped off their conference schedules tonight.

The MIAA is highlighted by the opening of VanNoord Arena, Calvin's new basketball home which promises to again reset the bar for the best in Division III. (Sorry, Hope.) Calvin opened the new gym in style, with the women beating Trine 71-65 in two overtimes and the men following suit with a 77-69 victory in front of 4,395 fans.

Kent Raymond scored 38 points, including 12-for-13 from the free throw line, as No. 1 Wheaton (Ill.) rallied past No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan 74-70 in their first defense of the top ranking. The Titans led 56-50 before the Thunder went on a 9-0 run, seven of them by Raymond.

&&g-boxl&&It was a day in which there was even more bad news about a pair of reeling teams. Ursinus, which made the men's Final Four last year, lost No. 2 scorer and leading three-point shooter Matt Hilton for the year with a broken foot. And Kean, which had lost three out of five, announced All-American Melissa Beyruti will miss the rest of the season as well. Ursinus lost to Johns Hopkins, while Kean beat Rowan on Wednesday night. Matt Pelton hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to finish Augustana's rally from a 10-point deficit with 6:01 left and lift the No. 7 Vikings past No. 10 Elmhurst, 56-55. No. 8 Buena Vista survived a late rally on the road to edge Cornell 71-68. The Beavers led by seven with 41 seconds left but the Rams had a chance to tie with four seconds left when Tyler Cody missed a three-pointer. No. 6 UW-Stevens Point survived a trip to UW-River Falls with an overtime win, while No. 9 UW-Whitewater held off UW-La Crosse at home 92-86. TCNJ knocked off No. 13 Richard Stockton, 79-73.

In women's action, Simpson coach Brian Niemuth earned his 400th career victory when the No. 11 Storm defeated Luther 73-43. York (Pa.) went 5-for-7 from the line in the final 27 seconds to secure a 77-72 upset of No. 17 Mary Washington. No. 15 Tufts scored the final 13 points of the game, surging past Emmanuel 65-55.

David Golembiowski scored 44 points to lead SUNYIT past D'Youville 98-69. He shot 16-for-22 from the floor and 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. Josh Bellaire scored 33 points on 14-for-17 shooting as Dubuque improved to 10-3 with an 81-71 win against crosstown rival Loras.

The St. Thomas women were held to the lowest point total in the program's history, as Bethel center Annegret Nautsch had 20 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks in a 65-33 win.
