Andre Roberson scored 15 points and Tyrone Hughes added 13 as the No. 20 Brandeis men went on the road Friday night and upset No. 3 Washington U 58-55 in overtime.
Wash U was just 2-for-6 from the free-throw line in overtime. The Bears failed on six consecutive second-half possessions with a chance to take the lead, having to settle for a bucket to tie with 12 seconds in regulation. &&g-boxr&&Rochester and St. John Fisher will meet in the finals of the Wendy�s Classic, formerly known as the JP Morgan Chase Tournament. Rochester dispatched NAIA Roberts Wesleyan 70-64, while St. John Fisher punished Rochester Tech 77-57 for its ninth consecutive win. The Cardinals won last year�s tournament against conference foe Nazareth.
The NESCAC finally opened conference play with all three ranked teams winning at home. No. 7 Williams romped over Tufts 91-55, No. 10 Middlebury took care of Bates 71-62 and No. 13 Amherst beat Wesleyan (Conn.) for the second time in 10 days, 87-71. No. 22 Whitworth had four scorers in double figures in outlasting Puget Sound 78-70. And Ithaca made a school-record 18 three-pointers en route to a 108-69 rout of visiting Alfred.
In women's action, Williams handed No. 11 Tufts a loss in its NESCAC opener, holding Tiffany Kornegay and Colleen Hart to a combined 9-for-33 from the floor. The Ephs didn't make a single three-pointer in winning 59-57. Chessie Jackson had 16 points and six rebounds for the Ephs.
Austin continued its surprise run in the SCAC. The Kangaroos defeated Rhodes 75-66 for their fifth win in conference and seventh win in a row, after winning just four SCAC games all of last season. Megan Kopecki and Jennifer King combined for 28 second-half points to spark Scranton to an 87-76 victory over Juniata. Scranton, which hasn't lost to Juniata since 1992, trailed at the half.
