Women's wrap: Thundering back

On January 7, Wheaton (Ill.) was barely over .500 and winless in conference. Three weeks later the Thunder are a game out of first place after beating Illinois Wesleyan 76-74 in double overtime.

Illinois Wesleyan led by one with less than a minute left in the second overtime. Wheaton's Lauren Graham was fouled and made the first  free throw to tie the game. She missed the second but teammate Elisabeth Potts grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. She also made one of two to give the Thunder a one-point lead. The Titans missed missed their next shot and Lauren Graham grabbed the rebound. She was fouled and made one of two again to give Wheaton a 76-74 lead. Illinois Wesleyan missed a shot at the buzzer and its 11th game win streak was over.

Ellen Plendl scored a game-high 19 points but her UW-Eau Claire teammates shot a combined 8-for-39 (20.5 percent) as the No. 14 Blugolds fell at UW-Whitewater 61-41. Plendl added 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Keisha Gordon scored 21 points to become the second leading scorer in George Fox history. The third ranked Bruins took care of Whitman 82-51.

Calvin stayed undefeated by blasting Trine 73-26. The Knights led 41-9 at the half and held Trine to 7-for-42 shooting from the floor. Carissa Verkaik scored 16, while Kelsey Irwin and Julia Hilbrands scored 12 and 10 points off the bench. 

Thirteen isn't an unlucky number for No. 10 Mount Union. It's the number of consecutive wins for the Purple Raiders after beating Capital 66-57 in Columbus. Ohio Northern defeated John Carroll 63-46 to remain a game back in the OAC standings.

No. 18 Muhlenberg lost for the fourth time in six games after starting the season 12-0, as Johns Hopkins took down the Mules for the second time in two weeks, 67-43. No. 19 St. Thomas won its 17th consecutive game and put some distance between itself and MIAC second-place Gustavus Adolphus with a 72-52 road victory.

Kaitlin Donahoe's 21 points led the Polar Bears past Maine rivals Colby.

Outside the Top 25, Bowdoin defeated Colby 64-52 to split the season series and win the game that counts in the NESCAC standings. Tufts stopped Bates 64-52 and remains a half game back of No. 1 Amherst in the conference standings.

Hartwick pulled itself into a first place tie with Ithaca by beating the Bombers 56-53. It was the Hawks' first win over Ithaca in 11 tries.

Emily Grabiak drilled a 3-pointer with only five seconds remaining to lift Catholic to a 56-55 come-from-behind win over Moravian. The Cardinals (16-4, 7-2 Landmark) trailed by as many as 13 points but were able to battle back. For the second straight Edgewood women's home game, 40 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner. The home team came out on the short end for the second time in a week, falling to Dominican 63-62 in overtime.

Lynchburg shot a sizzling 54.1 percent and surprised Eastern Mennonite 75-72. Shannon Allan's layup gave Lynchburg a lead midway through the second half and the Hornets (5-13) held on the rest of the way.

La Roche defeated Penn State-Behrend 56-42 and is still perfect in the AMCC. The Redhawks last conference loss was January 15, 2011.
