Lyndon, VT – Sophomore Steve DeRegis and senior Matthew Parent combined for 12 3-pointers as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team won its third straight game on the road, downing Vermont State University-Lyndon 85-71 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Knights improved to 3-2 on the season while Lyndon fell to 2-3. Clarkson has two home contests before the Thanksgiving break, beginning with a contest this Saturday against SUNY Poly.
As has been the case in a few games this year, Steve DeRegis started off the game hot from the perimeter, burying four 3-pointers in just over eight minutes to allow Clarkson to roll out to a modest early advantage. The Knights extended their lead to 23-18 around the midway point of the half on a 3-pointer from Matthew Parent, but the Hornets came back to take the lead at 7:52 when Gregory Gonyea made a layup-and-one to put the tally at 25-24. That lead for the hosts would be short-lived, however, as Tyson Maxam buried a 3-pointer and then Parent followed with two quick 3-pointers to put the Knights back up by six. When DeRegis made his fifth 3-pointer of the half at 4:32, Clarkson was up by 11, its biggest lead of the half. The Hornets would chip away to get the margin back to six, but a quick pull from Parent from the top of the key ended the streak and a Braeden Burns make off an inbounds play in the waning seconds allowed the Knights to head to the locker room up by 11, 47-36.
Clarkson made 10 3-pointers in the first half, but the Hornets kept it close by forcing turnovers and getting to the free throw line frequently. Lyndon picked up 11 points from the line, getting into the double bonus with a little over four minutes to go in the half.
Although Lyndon came out with a 3-pointer at the start of the second half to put the deficit back into single digits, it was only for a brief moment, as DeRegis came right back down the floor to nail another 3-pointer, and repeated the task on the next possession as well to give Clarkson a 14-point advantage. Every time the Hornets tried to make things interesting, Clarkson had an answer, including a back door cut dunk by Braeden Burns at 15:45 and a 3-pointer from Parent with eight minutes to play in the game. The Knights would extend the lead to as many as 18 points, but frequent free throws from both sides had the game settle at 14 at the final buzzer.
DeRegis finished with 21 points and Parent added in 17 points, with both players accumulating all of those scores from beyond the 3-point arc. Braeden Burns tossed in 11 points and Tyson Maxam chipped in 10 points.
For Lyndon, Gonyea had 20 points and four assists. Wesley McIntyre finished with 15 points and Matt Doyle contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
