LVC Moves Into Elite 8

More news about: Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Four double digit scorers propelled #17/#16 Lebanon Valley College to an 83-61 win over #19/#17 William Paterson Friday evening in the Sectional Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Dutchmen advance to the Elite 8 round for the first time in program history.

Andrea Hoover came just short of a triple-double with 25 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Her 25 points were just shy of the career-high 26 scored against Messiah on Feb. 27, 2010.

"Everybody stuck together tonight," said Hoover. "It was a big rollercoaster ride, a great team win. We knew they were going to be physical and very athletic, and we couldn't get outworked by them. We thought rebounds could win the game."

Renee Fritz registered her third double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Suzie Noyes (13) and Tierney Hiltz (10) rounded out the scoring for the Dutchmen.

Using rebounding to its advantage, LVC grabbed 52 rebounds to William Paterson's 30 boards. Hoover and Caitlin Murphy helped Fritz with nine rebounds each.

"We have a chance to go compete in a game for the Final Four, and that's pretty exciting," said head coach Todd Goclowski. "If you said someone would outrebound someone by 22, I would've said William Paterson got us tonight. I know my team's heart though and it doesn't surprise me."

BriAnna Lucas led the way for the Pioneers with 19 points, while April Smith added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Opening the game with a jumper from Fritz, Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 13-5 lead at 16:28. Holding the Pioneers to five points and scoring eight, the Dutchmen hit a first-half high of 11 points with 12:01 remaining.

Three straight baskets, including two 3-pointers by the Pioneers cut LVC's lead to three. Hoover responded with a 3-pointer and the Dutchmen scored nine more points to finish the half. William Paterson tallied seven points to finish the first down 33-25.

Tying up the score just one time and changing leads twice in the first half, Lebanon Valley used 18 points in the paint in the first while holding William Paterson to eight inside.

Breaking the scoring open in the second half, LVC scored 50 points and William Paterson notched 36 points. A jumper from Tatiana Javis and a 3-pointer by Floriana Borova put the Pioneers back within three points. Trading shots, LVC led by two points with 17:35 remaining. The game stayed close until a basket from Caitlin Murphy made it 45-38.

The Pioneers posted three-straight baskets to come within one point, the closest they'd come. Lebanon Valley went on a 20-2 run over the next 5:09 to run up by 19 points. A 3-pointer by Hiltz, a three-point play from Hoover, and another three ball from Hiltz helped propel the rally. Lebanon Valley scored 18 points and William Paterson notched 15 in the final six minutes to conclude the game.

LVC shot 50% from the floor and 88.2% at the free throw line, while William Paterson was 34.3% from field goal range, 25% behind the arc, and 54.5% at the line.

The Dutchmen face #11/#12 Christopher Newport at 7 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
