The 2021 D3hoops.com Classic was scheduled to have 19 teams, but just nine were able to attend, primarily due to positive COVID tests or changes in institutional policies regarding travel.

Mason Lydic and Cooper Parrott shot a combined 9-for-12 from 3-point range and No. 8 Marietta opened its stay at the 2021 D3hoops.com Classic with a 78-65 win against the University of Chicago.

The Maroons were as close as six points late in the first half when Ryan Martin hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 41-35. And Chicago (5-5) cut the lead to 70-61 following an 11-0 run in the second half. But Marietta (7-2) responded with an 8-1 run and put the game away. Lydic led all scorers with 21 points, including 5-for-6 shooting from 3-point range, and Parrott added 15, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Chicago was led by Brandon Beckman, who had 17 points, and Bryce Hopkins who added 16 points and six rebounds.

No. 23 Maryville grabbed the lead with a 12-0 run to start the second half and then held off Pacific Lutheran's rally for a 74-68 victory. Nicholas Clifton sparked the Fighting Scots' run with a three-point play followed up a layup off a Myles Rasnick steal.

Maryville held a 69-59 lead with 4:43 to play when Pacific Lutheran put together a 9-0 spurt with two threes from Shane McGaughey-Fick and one from Brett Williams. After the teams traded empty possessions, Maryville's JR Sanders was fouled with 26 seconds remaining. He made the first free throw and missed the second but Clifton grabbed the rebound and scored, pushing the Fighting Scots' lead to four. Pacific Lutheran came up empty on its last possession and the Lutes were assessed with a technical foul at the whistle, giving Maryville two technical free throws.

Rasnick scored 20 points for Maryville (10-1) on 7 for 11 shooting and Felix Uadiale posted a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds). Jordan Thomas filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Pacific Lutheran (7-3).

In between those results, Whittier used a make-shift lineup to beat Transylvania and Saint Mary's topped UW-Superior.

Whittier played without its starting point guard and several other players, but Ahmad Young busted out for 33 points and Kyle Priced added a double-double (14 points, 15 rebounds) in the short-handed Poets' 77-71 victory. Price had a big block and basket late to seal the win for Whittier (5-4) which won despite turning the ball over 23 times. The Poets outrebounded the Pioneers 63-40. Brandon Cromwell scored 23 points for Transylvania (6-3).

Saint Mary's "protected the nest" a little west of where it's normally located, as the Cardinals beat UW-Superior, 83-78. Raheem Anthony scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Saint Mary's. He also shot 12 for 16 from the foul line, including some crucial makes late in the game, after entering the game with a 42 percent free throw shooting percentage. Eli Vogel tallied 19 points for UW-Superior (3-7) who will play Whittier on Day 2 of the Classic.
