Kahler suffers heart attack

St. John Fisher women's coach Phil Kahler is recovering after suffering a heart attack.

Kahler, now in his 33rd season at the school, had an angiogram procedure done on Oct. 24, and is currently being treated at Rochester General Hospital.

Over his 33-year career, Kahler has compiled an NCAA record of 731-145. No coach in NCAA basketball history -- Division I, II or III, men's or women's -- has coached longer than Kahler and won a better percentage of games. His 731 victories are the most by a Division III coach, and his efforts have established St. John Fisher as the all-time winningest women's basketball program.

Last season, Kahler led St. John Fisher to a 25-3 overall record and an undefeated season in the Empire 8.

No timetable has been set for Kahler's return to the bench. Assistant coach Marianne O'Connor Ermi will continue coaching the team until then.

St. John Fisher will open up the 2006-2007 season on Friday, Nov. 17, hosting the Holiday Inn Invitational.
