GREEN BAY, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay lived up to its preseason billing with a 70-37 exhibtion win over St. Norbert at the Resch Center. Green Bay is tabbed to finish second in the NCAA Division I Horizon League, while St. Norbert is picked for fifth in the NCAA Division III Midwest Conference. It was St. Norbert's first-ever exhibition game against an NCAA Division I opponent, and was the unoffical debut of newly minted St. Norbert coach Gary Grzesk, a former Green Bay player.
St. Norbert held its own in the early going, trailing 25-13 with 4 minutes, 49 seconds left in the first half. Green Bay would go on a 7-0 run to end the first half, and then opened the second half on an 11-0 run over the first 3:58 of the second half to take a 43-13 lead. St. Norbert would get no closer than 49-26 with 9:16 left to play.
Green Bay was held to 41% shooting from the floor, making just 25 of 61 shots. The Phoenix also made two of 10 3-pointers but were 18-for-22 from the free-throw line and held a commanding 48-30 rebounding advantage. Aswan Minatee led Green Bay with 17 points off the bench, while Terry Evans added 16 points and Ryan Evanochko 14. Mike Schachtner had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
St. Norbert shot just 30.2 percent (16-for-53) from the floor, including 5-for-22 in the first half. The Green Knights connected on just three of 23 (13 percent) three-point field-goal attempts and were 2-for-7 at the charity stripe. No St. Norbert player scored in double figures, with Tom Katzfey leading the squad with eight points.
