Around the Nation

After about 12 days of the Division III basketball season, some ranked teams have fallen off, while others have proven themselves worthy.

Meanwhile, some unranked teams have forced themselves onto the national radar. While it remains to be seen whether the success of York (N.Y.) will be short-lived, the Lake Forest women put a 55-foot dagger in the heart of Washington U. to force overtime, went on to beat the Bears in the extra session, then knocked off ranked Williams the next day to win Wash U's tournament.

Not bad for a team picked for third place in its own league. Find out more in this week's Around the Nation.

Now, about those Cardinals from York. They started off with back-to-back wins against Top 25 teams before stumbling at NYU and again last night against Rutgers-Newark. In the past, this team would dwell on the loss but coach Ronald St. John says that's not going to happen this time around.

And the defending champion Hope women keep on rolling in a week where the defending men's champion saw its long win streak ended. Will they be able to succeed where the last four defending women's champs failed, in even making the tournament? That and more in this week's Around the Nation.
