Back in the saddle

Division III basketball got underway with a vengeance on Friday night. Lincoln knocked off Widener 89-81 in overtime at Franklin and Marshall despite getting just eight points from Sami Wylie (on 1-for-10 shooting). York (N.Y.) ran past Christopher Newport 98-92 in a matchup of tournament teams from last season.

No. 9 St. Thomas went to the west coast and got 33 points from All-American Isaac Rosefelt to beat No. 20 Occidental 72-63. Last year's national runner-up, No. 10 Wittenberg, got 14 points from Dane Borchers in a 57-46 win against Swarthmore. Ten of his points came in the second half after his first half ended early with foul trouble.

In women's action, third-ranked DePauw got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Liz Bondi to lead five scorers in double figures in a 75-68 win against No. 12 Washington U. at Illinois Wesleyan's tournament.

No. 10 Messiah and No. 8 Mary Washington set up a meeting by rolling past their first-round opponents at Messiah's tipoff tournament. No. 18 Howard Payne blew past No. 22 Trinity (Texas) 76-45. No. 9 Baldwin-Wallace and No. 4 Hope won and will play at Hope on Saturday. No. 1 Scranton pulled away from Montclair State after a 49-49 tie to win 75-62 at Rochester.
