Capital women's coach Dixie Jeffers became the sixth coach in NCAA Division III history to win 500 career games with as the Crusaders downed Wittenberg 69-63 on Saturday.
In her 24th year as a college basketball coach Jeffers is a combined 500-133 (52-21 in three years at Rio Grande (Ohio) and 448-112 in 21 years at Capital).
Sophomore Caitlin Elsass led four Capital players in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Junior Tiffany Withers added 11 points, while freshmen Kristen Richardson tallied 15 and Mackenzi Thompson scored 10 for the Crusaders, who improved to 2-1 on the season. Wittenberg falls to 1-2.
The Crusaders used an 8-0 run early in the first half to take an 11-7 lead and didn't trail after that point. Thompson's three-pointer with 6:06 left in the second half capped a 7-0 run that gave Capital its biggest lead of the ballgame at 53-38. The Tigers cut the deficit to four points at 67-63 after a three-pointer from Andrea Hackett with 17 seconds remaining; however, Thompson made two free throws to seal the contest.
