Mac back? Scots drop River Falls

Just two years removed from a season it couldn't finish, the Macalester women's basketball team produced an eye-popping victory, defeating UW-River Falls 52-46 on Wednesday night.

With a roster of six freshmen and three sophomores, the Scots have already matched last season's win total. Macalester went 2-20 in 2005-06 after an abbreviated 2004-05 campaign in which it went 0-6.

The Scots got 22 points from freshman Danielle Johnson and 16 points from classmate Ann Baltzer in the victory. They took an early 26-10 lead by holding UW-River Falls to 4-for-24 shooting. The Falcons rallied to take a 39-38 lead, but Macalester responded with a 12-2 run to take a 49-40 lead with 2:23 left in the game.

Wednesday night's men's and women's scores.

In men's action, Zach Johnson matched his season high with 28 points and Jake Phillips scored nine of his 18 points in overtime as Carleton rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat No. 21 UW-La Crosse 75-64. Both teams made the NCAA Tournament last season. Texas-Dallas remained unbeaten, topping Austin 61-52.
