Jack Surridge picked up the 500th win of his career as his North Park women's basketball team earned a 62-52 win against Rockford in the title game of the Rockford Holiday tourney. Surridge now ranks sixth all-time in wins among NCAA Division III coaches and is the second women's coach to reach 500 wins this season, following Capital's Dixie Jeffers.
"It's gratifying," Surridge said. "For the most part I didn't think about it, but there were a couple of moments right before the game and after that I thought about it. Everybody played well."
The Vikings made Surridge's historic win somewhat easy at the start as they pulled out to an 8-1 lead. North Park then extended its lead to 20-7 after baskets from senior Laura Mount, Lyndsey Johnson and Maggie Butler. But Rockford didn't back down. The Regents responded with a 26-13 scoring clip over the final 9:11 of the first half to pull even at 33-33 at halftime.
A 10-2 run fueled by baskets from Coleman, Evie Peterson, Anna Mueller and Stylianee Damianides to start the second half allowed the Vikings to pull ahead by seven in the first five minutes however. North Park then comfortably built its lead back up to 15 points after a pair of free throws from Johnson with 8:01 left. Rockford did fight back to close within eight, but the Vikings held off the rally and picked up their seventh win overall and second in a row.
Evie Peterson finished with a game-high 19 points while both Stylianee Damianides and Mount each added 15 points.
