A late 18-2 run propelled the host Shoremen to a 61-55 win over visiting Keystone tonight at Cain Athletic Center, marking the 1,000th all-time victory in the history of Washington College men's basketball. Senior forward Joey Breslin led four Shoremen in double figures, finishing with 14 points and game highs of 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in the win.
The teams went into halftime tied at 22-22. The Shoremen (2-6) built a seven-point lead with 12:39 to play in the second half when senior forward Kevin Marshburn knocked down a 3-pointer to give WC a 34-27 advantage.
Washington then went cold, going over six minutes without another field goal as Keystone (4-6) went on a 17-2 run to surge in front, 44-36, following a layup by Sherrick Belt with 6:17 to play. Marshburn ended Washington's drought and began the Shoremen's decisive 18-2 run by draining another three-pointer with 6:05 to play.
WC freshman forward Matt Hamm hit an important 3-pointer of his own during the big run. With Washington leading, 49-46, sophomore guard Tim Kohlrus kicked the ball out to Hamm, who drained his triple to extend the lead to 52-46 with 59 seconds on the clock. Keystone turned the ball over on the next possession with 37 seconds on the clock and Washington went 9-of-10 at the free throw line during the remaining seconds to seal the win.
Hamm, Kohlrus, and sophomore guard Todd Green each finished with 10 points for Washington to join Breslin in double figures. Marshburn contributed a career-high eight points. Charles Edwards led the Giants with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds in the loss. Belt added 17 points.
Washington shot 40% from the field in the game, while holding Keystone to 34% shooting. The Shoremen outrebounded the Giants, 38-33.
Washington's 1,000th all-time victory comes in the program's 95th season of competition.
