Fifield wins 500; USM up to 11-1

Gary Fifield became the third women's coach this season to reach the 500-win milestone and No. 5 Southern Maine improved to 11-1 in the process as the Huskies defeated Rhode Island College 75-63.

Ashley Marble had game highs with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the win, improving Southern Maine to 500-80 in 20 seasons under Fifield. The .862 is the highest among qualifiers for active Division III coaches.

No. 18 Bridgewater (Va.) went scoreless for the first 9:24 and lost to Roanoke 69-67. Roanoke (6-5) led by as many as 18 but had to hold on as Erin Hanson blocked a shot by preseason All-American Katy Herr Lovell with two seconds left. In men's action, Haverford rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit on the road to win at No. 19 Johns Hopkins 64-59. Sophomore guard Chaz Thomas had a team-high 17 points, while seniors Ray Brown and Mike Fratangelo each tallied 15 points for the Fords (5-7).

Wesleyan weathered an 18-0 run by No. 2 Amherst and rallied to cut the Lord Jeffs' lead to eight, but was buried by Amherst's 18-2 run to end the game. Dan Wheeler shot 8-for-11 and scored 20 points in the win. No. 12 Bates kept pace heading into its showdown with Amherst, rolling past University of New England 90-46. More men's scores.

Ryan Cain scored 13 of his 28 points in the final eight minutes as No. 23 Worcester Polytech rallied from a second-half deficit to win at Springfield 82-75. Keene State improved to 11-1 with a 101-88 win against Western Connecticut.
