Calvin sent Hope to the loss column for the first time since Dec. 2, 2005, and took over sole possession of first place in the MIAA with a 60-57 win on Saturday.
Lisa Winkle scored 13 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the No. 11 Knights past the No. 2 Flying Dutch. It was the first loss for either Hope basketball team in the DeVos Fieldhouse, now in its second season.
"This was a great win for our team confidence but it is also just one game," said fourth-year Calvin women's coach John Ross. "It puts us in first place in our league which is where we want to be but we also have another big game coming up against Olivet on Wednesday."
At the other end of the spectrum, Caltech's women's team followed the men into the history books, winning a SCIAC game for the first time in their short history. The program started in 1995 and joined the SCIAC in 2001-02, winning for the first time by defeating Pomona-Pitzer 55-53. The win also snapped a 50-game overall losing streak. More women's scores.
Jackie Hauke scored 18 points and Katie Streck had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as No. 12 Wilmington won at home against No. 6 Baldwin-Wallace 72-69. Jessica McEntree scored 21 and had 15 boards as No. 21 NYU won at No. 10 Brandeis 59-53. Whitworth handed No. 25 Pacific Lutheran its third loss in four games, 63-60.
In men's action, there was a double whammy for No. 12 Bates. Second-ranked Amherst came in and handled the Bobcats, holding a double-digit lead for nearly 20 minutes in a 79-64 win. On top of that, Trinity (Conn.), which beat Bates on Friday night, was blown out on Saturday 102-85 at Tufts. More men's scores.
John Carroll improved to 9-6, victimizing No. 4 Ohio Northern 63-61 at home. Calvin couldn't repeat last year's magic, as Josh Meckes' open three fell short and No. 11 Hope held on against its archrival 65-62. No. 13 William Paterson had three chances at a game-tying 3-pointer but none fell as the Pioneers lost 72-69 to Ramapo.
No. 14 Elmhurst won its 13th in a row, scoring the first 11 points and running out to a 22-6 lead in beating Illinois Wesleyan 76-57. Brandeis bounced back from consecutive losses on the road and improved to 11-3 with a win against No. 24 NYU.
Rochester swept the JP Morgan Chase Tournament, with the women beating Brockport State 78-75 in double overtime and the men rolling over Geneseo State 80-53. The annual tournament inclused eight teams from the Rochester area.
