No. 1 Scranton didn't remain atop its pedestal for long. Mount St. Mary recorded the biggest win in its women's basketball program's history, defeating the Lady Royals 69-49.
The Blue Knights got off to a hot start, and carried an eight-point lead into the intermission. After Mount St. Mary ran the lead to as many as 14, Scranton (15-2) cut it back to 10 on a jumper from senior Taryn Mellody at the four minute mark. Mount Saint Mary (12-3) answered as junior Chantel Anthony made a bucket and a foul shot to extend the lead to 13. Junior Jackie Markert followed up with two free throws and the Blue Knights led by 15 with three minutes to play.
"That was a great win for our program and the kids are really enjoying the win right now," said coach Randall Ognibene. "This team can be very good if we are able to build on this win."
Anthony led all scorers with 22 points, while junior Vanessa Lawson added in 20 for the Blue Knights. Markert finished with eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Mellody hit several off balance shots and finished with 19 points to lead Scranton. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Monday's men's and women's scores.
