Wash U outlasts NYU, twice

The Washington U. women made it three wins in two weekends against Top 25 teams, while the men won their 13th game in a row Sunday afternoon as both defeated NYU.

The No. 10 men scored the last six points in regulation and went on to defeat No. 24 NYU 79-78 in overtime, as five players -- including four starters -- fouled out. Sean Wallis led the Bears with 26 points, including 15-for-16 from the foul line, while Tyler Nading added 25 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

The women, sitting just outside the Top 25 thanks in part to a 1-3 start this season, improved to 14-4 behind Jamie McFarlin's 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sunday's women's scores.

No. 25 Guilford had three chances to tie down the stretch but couldn't convert at the foul line, as No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan won 72-69. Ton Ton Balenga scored 25 points for the defending national champs, while Brandon Adair added 13 points and nine rebounds. Ben Strong poured in 30 points for Guilford, raising his scoring average to 24.2 points per game. DePauw shot 62% from the floor in the second half and rallied from a 21-point deficit to deny Millsaps a home sweep of the other top two teams in the SCAC as the Tigers won 76-74. No. 17 Brandeis finished the weekend home sweep of No. 4 Chicago as Carmela Breslin scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
