Pool C shocker: Cut back to 18!

The NCAA men's basketball committee announced this morning that there had been a mistake -- instead of the tournament field containing three Pool B teams and 19 Pool C teams, as previously announced, it would instead contain four Pool B teams and 18 Pool C teams.

The memo from the NCAA championships department said, "An error in calculating the number of eligible independent institutions sponsoring NCAA Division III Men's Basketball has been corrected and, as a result, the pool allocations have been adjusted for the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship."

Correction of the error puts the fourth Pool B team, which in the most recent projections was believed to be Westminster (Pa.), into the field instead of competing for one of the Pool C teams. Westminster is in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, which does not have an automatic bid. Only independents and schools in conferences without automatic bids can get Pool B bids -- the Pool C bids are truly at-large selections.

The Northern Athletics Conference also does not have an automatic bid, nor does the Great South Athletic Conference.
