Wesleyan (Ga.) snapped a 67-game losing streak Sunday, defeating Fisk 54-51. The losing streak was the longest in any NCAA division of women's basketball.
Junior guard Carisa Mitchell scored a career-high 32 points, including 18-for-23 from the foul line, in the win, the team's first in exactly three years, dating to a Feb. 18, 2004 win against Agnes Scott.
"Before the game, our coach told us that we were going to have to run for missed free throws since we had not been meeting our goals that we were setting before games," said Mitchell. "So when I stepped to the line, it was concentration, concentration, concentration."
The longest losing streak in Division III now belongs to Mount Mary, believed to be at 50 games. Wesleyan improved to 1-21.
About 85 miles away and at the opposite end of the Division III spectrum, Jessica McEntee scored a career-high 36 points to drag No. 7 NYU past Emory 69-67. The Violets trailed 40-25 in the first half before rallying. No. 11 DePauw routed Oglethorpe 95-58 to wrap up the top seed in the SCAC tournament. Sunday's women's scores.
If the Rochester men had any hopes of still making the NCAA Tournament, they kept them alive Sunday with a 66-61 home win against No. 11 Washington U. The Bears can still win the UAA by beating Chicago next Saturday. The No. 14 Maroons won at Carnegie Mellon 82-75. Sunday's men's scores.
