Oberlin removes Cavaco's interim label

Oberlin has removed the interim tag from men's coach Isaiah Cavaco and hired him as men's basketball coach. Cavaco led the Yeomen to a 5-20 record this past season.

"I am thrilled to have Isaiah Cavaco lead our men's basketball program toward future excellence," athletic director Joe Karlgaard said. "Oberlin College is fortunate to have a bright, young, up-and-coming teacher join its ranks. Isaiah Cavaco is a future star in the coaching profession."

Before serving as the team's interim head coach in 2006-07, Cavaco worked as the team's top assistant for two seasons. A native of Honolulu, Cavaco began his coaching career at Ohio University as a graduate assistant and then returned to his alma mater, Yale, as an assistant coach. After a stint as a financial analyst, Cavaco returned to coaching as an assistant at nearby John Carroll before coming to Oberlin.

Cavaco earned four letters as a point guard for the Bulldogs. He graduated from Yale in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in economics, and he earned his master's degree in recreation and sports sciences from Ohio in 2002.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue working with such fine student-athletes here at Oberlin College," Cavaco said. "Our program has recently made significant strides toward moving up the North Coast Athletic Conference (standings). With an experienced group of young returning players, I look forward to continued progress and success in the near future."
