The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin got bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as Carroll, an upset winner in the Midwest Conference, went to Augustana and won Thursday night 73-69 behind 32 points from Nathan Drury.
Carroll, leading at the half, answered the Vikings' second-half surge with a 13-0 run to take the lead and held on down the stretch. The Pioneers advanced and will play at St. Thomas in Saturday night's second round.
Loras rallied from a tremendous first-half deficit to take the lead in the second half but lost 85-82 at St. John's in overtime in the Duhawks' first trip to the NCAA Tournament. St. John's will play at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.
John Carroll survived an upset attempt by Westminster (Pa.), rallying from a 13-point second half deficit, scoring 59 points in the second half and beating the Titans 87-83. Widener continued its run as Essien Ford scored 19 points and the Pride shot 56% in the second half, beating King's after winning the MAC Commonwealth in an upset. Keene State had little trouble with Rivier.
