Hope takes Rivalry lead

Marcus Vanderheide scored 30 points and Tyler Wolfe added 26 as No. 5 Hope survived 3-for-11 free-throw shooting to win 79-76 at uber-rival Calvin. Wolfe hit a layup with a minute left to give the Flying Dutchmen the three-point lead in a back-and-forth game, one which Calvin led by as many as 10 in the second half.

Calvin guard Caleb Veldhouse had two shots from beyond the arc in the closing seconds but couldn't hit either one.

Another enormous Division III rivalry game was taken by Amherst, as the No. 3 Lord Jeffs pulled away from No. 10 Williams in an 86-70 game. Kevin Hopkins led Amherst with 20 while Stephen Wheeler added a career-high 19.

"Wheeler's a very, very good player but we lost him too much, we gave him too many open looks," said Williams coach Dave Paulsen. "I think he was the key for them; you know Hopkins and Baskauskas are going to get their points, but when they're getting 19 off the bench from Wheeler we're in trouble."

Amherst won despite losing forward Brandon Jones to injury.

No. 16 Amherst was unable to hold on to a nine-point halftime lead in the women's version of the rivalry, as Williams rallied at home to hand the Lord Jeffs their first loss, 64-59. The loss leaves three undefeated women's teams.
