Just another WIAC night

Third seed UW-Stevens Point survived an upset attempt but No. 2 seed UW-Platteville did not as seventh-seeded UW-Eau Claire roared out to an early 18-point lead and held the Pioneers off all the way through an 84-80 win.

Geoff Probst scored 28 points on 11-for-14 shooting, including 5-for-7 from downtown, while Ryan Shea and Dan Beyer added 17 for the Blugolds, who improved to 12-14.

"I thought our kids played real determined and focused basketball," Blugolds coach Terry Gibbons told WBIZ after the game. "I thought our kids stepped up and did a nice job getting the ball inside. Geoff and Ryan did a great job for us."

The 19th-ranked Pioneers had a shot to take the lead after a steal by Jeff Skemp, but Charlie Lohoff missed a three-pointer and Beyer answered with a pair of free throws.

Trailing by five with 1:47 left, UW-Stevens Point got back-to-back baskets from Pete Rortvedt to tie the game at 55. In overtime, Scott Austin scored on a traditional three-point play to cut the No. 8 Pointers' lead to two, but Stevens Point scored the final six points to seal the 74-66 win.
