Tyler Nading�s putback with 11 seconds left gave Division III's defending national champion, Washington University in St. Louis, a 91-90 double overtime win at D-II Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday night in an exhibition game.
Nading, who finished the contest with 18 points and six rebounds, was left unguarded after junior Aaron Thompson�s three-pointer from the corner was off the mark. Thompson led the Bears with 35 points on 13-for-24 shooting, including 9-for-17 from three-point range.
Thompson scored 19 first half points on 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range as the top-ranked team in the preseason D3hoops.com Top 25 built a 43-40 halftime advantage.
The Bears jumped out quickly in the game as Thompson had 11 points in the first eight minutes giving WU a 16-8 advantage. Nathan Whittaker drained of his five three-pointers to give UMSL a 33-31 lead, but sophomore Caleb Knepper came off the bench for a three-point play to put WU up 34-33.
&&g-boxr&&Thompson gave Washington U. a 66-53 second half lead with a three-pointer, and then Knepper drained another deep three giving Washington U. its largest lead at 71-58 with 9:27 to play.
The Bears went cold from the field and UMSL responded as Whittaker hit a three-pointer to trim the advantage to 73-67. Coach Mark Edwards was called for a technical foul with 2:46 remaining, and UMSL made three of four free throws to trim the lead to 76-72. A steal and layup by Beaumont Beasley cut the lead to 76-74, and then Jason Black sent the game to the first overtime with a driving layup.
Two free throws by Alex Jackson gave UMSL an 83-77 lead with 3:08 left in the first overtime, but a three-pointer from Thompson and a three from the top of the key from Nading tied it at 83-83 to send the game into a second overtime. Two Ryan Lawrence free throws in a back-and-forth fourth period gave UMSL the 90-89 lead before Nading�s heroics.
Washington U. shot 52.4 percent (33-63) from the field for the game, and hit 14-of-30 from three-point range. The Bears outrebounded UMSL, 36-34, and recorded 25 assists and had 14 steals. Senior Sean Wallis had five points and a game-high 10 assists in his first action since suffering a season-ending injury against Maryville (Mo.) on Nov. 20, 2007. Junior Cameron Smith added 13 points and seven rebounds in 43 minutes.
