Dick Whitmore became the seventh head coach in Division III history to reach 600 wins as his Colby White Mules downed rival Bowdoin 65-55 on Saturday afternoon before 2,000 fans at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Whitmore was mobbed by his team and given the game ball after the win over his alma mater. He graduated from Bowdoin in 1965 and is in his 38th year of coaching at Colby. Whitmore has a 600-318 career record with the Mules.
"I should feel relieved right now, but I'm just too exhilarated and proud of what the team accomplished today," Whitmore said. "They won today the way so many of my teams have won in the past."
&&g-boxr&&"A lot of people made a big deal of us going up against Bowdoin since I went to school there," Whitmore said. "But beating the opponent on that given day is what's important. When I knew that we were going to win in the closing moments I wasn't thinking that it was Bowdoin and feeling good about that. It was more the realization of 600 wins and all the thoughts about the teams I've had over the years."
Artie Cutrone had 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting and dished four assists for Colby (10-4, 1-0 NESCAC). Mike Hauser led the Polar Bears (10-4, 0-1) with 12 points and eight assists.
