Strong hits 700

Scranton's Mike Strong became just the second women's basketball coach in NCAA Division III history with 700 victories, as the Lady Royals defeated Drew 73-54.

Strong joined the recently retired Phil Kahler of St. John Fisher, who went 757-171. Drew has never beaten Scranton in 53 tries.

The University of Chicago women handed No. 1 Rochester its first loss of the season, defeating the Yellowjackets 71-51 on the road. The Maroons took the lead for good on a Jamie Stinson layup with 4:06 left in the first half and never looked back, leading by double digits for all but one possession of the final 17 minutes.

&&f-boxr&&Sophomore Karly Kasper tied a career high with 20 points, while Alex Leach added 14 for the Maroons. "I thought we had a great inspired effort on Friday night against Wash U," Rochester coach Jim Scheible told WYSL-AM after the game, "and for whatever reason we couldn't match that."

Ali Marzella scored 23 points while Krista Prato Matthews had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Trinity (Texas) past No. 5 Oglethorpe, 85-72. LeShonda Lillard scored a career-high 26 points to lead Emory past No. 13 Brandeis.

Last year the Washington U. men laid a tremendous egg at Carnegie Mellon, losing 86-55. This year, the No. 3 Bears looked a lot more like a national contender as junior Aaron Thompson poured in a game-high 30 points and senior Sean Wallis recorded his third double-double in a 90-70 win against the No. 18 Tartans.
