Stout stops UW-SP

The WIAC has not had a women�s team go undefeated in conference since 2003 and UW-Stout extended that streak for another year. Julia Hirssig erupted for 37 points and the Blue Devils upset No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 67-64.

UW-Stevens Point entered the night with a 14 game win streak and a 10-0 WIAC record. The Pointers looked poised to continue their success when Jessi Sporle hit a jumper to give them a 64-59 lead with 2:10 to play. But the Pointers did not add another point the rest of the way. Hirssig grabbed a rebound (her 12th of the night) off a missed free throw and then hit two free throws to give the UW-Stout the lead with nine seconds left.

&&f-boxl&&Luther picked up its biggest win of the season by surprising No. 9 Simpson 70-55. The Norse out rebounded the Storm 41-28 and pushed their conference record to 6-5. In men�s action Randolph-Macon bounced back from its road loss at Guilford by holding off Roanoke 85-80. The Maroons cut the deficit to one several times but couldn't stop the Tigers from winning their 14th game in 15 tries. They are tied for first in the ODAC with equally hot Guilford who defeated Hampden-Sydney 62-56 for their 12th win in 14 tries. More men�s scores.

No. 15 Elmhurst won its seventh straight game, hanging on for a 65-63 victory over No. 18 Augustana. Brent Ruch had 21 points and two blocks to become the school's all-time leader in the latter category. The Bluejays have a one game lead on three teams in the CCIW standings, including No. 14 Wheaton (Ill.) who beat Millikin 72-55.

The NCAA released the first men's regional rankings on Wednesday afternoon. St. Thomas is ranked No. 1 in the country but UW-Stevens Point is ranked No. 1 in the West region. The Pointers, who are ranked third nationally, beat UW-Stout 73-64 to improve to 11-0 in conference.

The teams sitting atop the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Atlantic regional rankings also won on Wednesday night. No. 8 Capital got 24 points from Ryan Wood and took care of Marietta 85-70. No. 21 Franklin and Marshall stopped Johns Hopkins 71-70. No. 10 Richard Stockton survived Kean 70-66 in overtime to clinch the NJAC South title.

Montclair State defeated New Jersey City in the 150th meeting between the teams, 71-60. The Red Hawks' win kept them atop the NJAC North and ended the Gothic Knights' streak of 38 consecutive non-losing seasons dating back to 1970. Washington College, who has won six of its last seven, rallied from 11 down to beat Ursinus 66-60.

No. 7 Buena Vista rallied at home to beat Wartburg to split the regular season series with the Knights. The Beavers trailed 50-39 at the break but turned the tables by outscoring Wartburg 50-29 in the second half.
