Down to the last days

Instead of getting clearer, the East region conference races remain up for grabs going into Saturdays regular season finales.

Geneseo State missed a chance to clinch the SUNYAC by losing at Fredonia State, 64-59. The Blue Knights will get another chance to win the conference outright if they can beat Brockport State tomorrow. If they lose, they will share first place with Oneonta State, Oswego State and Buffalo State. The Bengals pulled themselves into the three-way second place tie by downing Oswego State, 90-83. Buffalo State is 14-4 in 2008 after starting the season 0-6.

&&g-boxr&&St. Lawrence missed a chance to clinch the Liberty League title when the Saints stumbled against Vassar, 76-65. The Brewers were just 9-14 overall and 4-8 in conference before the upset win. Hamilton narrowly avoided a similar fate against Skidmore (7-16, 2-11) but nipped the Thoroughbreds 64-62 to pull even with St. Lawrence in the standings. Friday's mens scores.

At least regular season supremacy in the Empire 8 remains clear. No. 9 Ithaca rolled over Nazareth 113-86, even without injured big man Jeff Bostic. Sean Burton had 32 points and 13 assists for the Bombers. Utica beat St. John Fisher 68-63, leaving the Cardinals in need of help to make the Empire 8 tournament. St. John Fisher must win on Saturday against Elmira and hope Elmira can defeat Nazareth on Tuesday to earn the No. 4 seed. No. 6 Puget Sound finished the game on a 12-4 run to hold off Pacific 76-64 and remain undefeated against Division III opponents.

In women's action, No. 18 DePauw stayed hot at home with a big win over No. 4 Oglethorpe, 92-86. The Tigers built a 22 point second half lead before the Stormy Petrels rallied for a close finish. Emily Marshall had 13 points and 14 rebounds for DePauw who has won 46 straight at home in conference.

No. 3 George Fox has a chance to finish the regular season perfect after taking care of Willamette, 67-55. No. 5 Rochester has a chance to pull even with No. 12 Washington U. in the UAA race on Sunday after the Yellowjackets beat Chicago tonight 56-52. Friday's women's scores.

No. 2 Washington U. is already in the men's tournament, but will any other UAA teams will join them? The Bears hurt No. 25 Carnegie Mellons chances by beating the Tartans 77-63. Chicago defeated regionally ranked Rochester 74-54. Brandeis stayed in the at-large conversation with a win over Emory, 65-54.
