Stevens Point, UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater are all in the D3hoops.com Top 10 and high in the NCAA's regional rankings, and with all three reaching the semifinals of the WIAC tournament, it's likely all will make the NCAA Tournament. Pete Rortvedt scored a team-high 17 points for the Pointers, who shot 61 percent from the field in the win. And if there were any doubt about UW-Whitewater's worthiness, the Warhawks rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to force overtime at UW-Platteville before falling 77-74.
In women's action, UW-Eau Claire did it again to UW-Whitewater, crushing the Warhawks 61-34 in the WIAC semifinals. Whitewater shot 23 percent from the floor and 17 percent from three-point range, reminiscent of Eau Claire's regular-season win at home. Whitewater was No. 4 in the region, ahead of Eau Claire, when the week started. Eau Claire will face Stevens Point on Saturday for the conference title. Thursday's women's scores.
In other men's games, the favorites advanced in the Northwest Conference, with Puget Sound riding a great shooting night to an 86-74 semifinal win against Lewis and Clark, while Whitworth needed to rally to win at home against Linfield. Whitworth center Nate Montgomery hit three three-pointers on his way to 31 points and had 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. The University of New England held off Salve Regina 77-75 in the CCC semifinals, improving to 23-4. The Nor'easters need to win the tournament to get in. They'll face Colby-Sawyer. Bethany and Thomas More advanced to the PAC championship game, while Salem State and Bridgewater State made the MASCAC final.
Elsewhere in women's action, the ODAC quarterfinals took place all day at the Salem Civic Center, with favorites Roanoke, Bridgewater, Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon advancing. Mary Washington and No. 8 York (Pa.) won to advance to the CAC championship. St. Mary's (Ind.) will get another crack at No. 2 Hope with the MIAA title on the line. St. Mary's handed Hope its only loss of the season, 16 games ago.
George Fox jumped out to a 17-2 lead on Whitman and rolled to an 85-47 lead, remaining unbeaten. The Bruins will face Puget Sound, which ended Pacific's season 71-53 in the other NWC semifinal. Wartburg's women advanced to the IIAC title game as well, beating Loras 61-54 while No. 16 Simpson beat Buena Vista.
