Bears win Maine event

Before Wednesday night Bowdoin hadn't won a women's basketball game at Southern Maine's Hill Gymnasium since 2003. The No. 7 Polar Bears scratched that six-year itch by beating the No. 17 Huskies 60-47. Caitlin Hynes and Leah Rubega combined for 32 points and 21 rebounds for Bowdoin who never trailed in improving to 4-0. Nicole Paradis led Southern Maine with 12 points.

Emmanuel (5-0) also stayed undefeated by upsetting No. 14 Brandeis, 78-67. Iman Davis finished three assists shy of a triple-double for the Saints with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Preseason All-American Kathryn Stockbower finished a great performance on a high note by hitting a layup with 3.4 seconds left to lift Swarthmore past McDaniel, 51-49. Stockbower picked up 30 points, her 51st straight game with double-digit scoring. More women's scores.

&&g-boxl&&On the men's side, CUNYAC play opened with a battle of preseason All Americans. Marcel Esonwune (25 points, 23 rebounds) got the better of Richard Jean-Baptiste (17 points, seven rebounds) and so did his team as York (N.Y.) edged Brooklyn, 68-67. St. Joseph's (L.I.) gained a key win over defending Skyline Conference champion Farmingdale State 67-55 in the league opener for both teams. More men's scores.

Elsewhere it was a night of firsts for teams in New York and New England. First-year program Sage earned its first win over a Division III opponent by beating Bard 77-74. Anna Maria notched its first win of the year when Junior De La Hoz's three-pointer pushed the Amcats past Coast Guard, 57-54. No. 13 Amherst handed Westfield State its first loss of the season, 84-68.

The new D3hoops Top 25 poll features a new team atop the women's rankings ' Illinois Wesleyan. The top-ranked Titans celebrated the occasion with a 65-52 win at NAIA Missouri Baptist. The Titan men are also ranked (No. 16) and they also won, beating Monmouth 65-55. Other newly ranked teams that were victorious include Middlebury (88-58 over Castleton State) and Carthage (104-67 over Indiana University-Northwest). Brian Meehan won his 100th game at Brandeis (260th overall) as the Judges defeated Clark, 51-47.
