Quietly making noise

Three teams who quietly entered the day 7-1 made noise with big wins over ranked conference foes.

The Spartans upended No. 14 St. Mary�s (Md.) 64-61 on a Nick Brady three-point shot with four seconds left. His bucket gave him 22 points in the victory. Alex Franz had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Seahawks who slip to 6-2, 3-1 in conference.

Western Connecticut picked up its eighth win and a key conference victory over No. 10 Mass.-Dartmouth 90-86. DaQuan Brooks had his second consecutive 21-point game for the Colonials who out rebounded the Corsairs 47-27. Saturday�s men�s scoreboard.

Wilmington outlasted No. 2 John Carroll 107-105 in triple overtime in a game which had 18 ties and 162 field goal attempts. The Blue Streaks, who have lost two straight, led 97-90 in double-overtime with 2:25 to play. But the Quakers shut John Carroll and hit seven free-throws to force a third overtime where they pulled out the victory. �What an incredible game, environment. I�m gassed,� Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt said. �John Carroll is just a super physical, relentless basketball team. For the most part, I thought we matched their toughness.�

&&g-boxr&&A few days after getting beaten in Washington by Division I Gonzaga, No. 15 Augustana got beaten by Washington U. as the top-ranked Bears rolled past the Vikings 71-53. Aaron Thompson had 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting for Washington U. who led by as many as 23 in the second half. No. 13 Richard Stockton, who lost three games all last year, picked up its third loss of the season to Susquehanna, 69-66. Spenser Spencer led the Crusaders with 24 points on 10-for-20 shooting.

On the women's side, No. 16 William Paterson continued its Atlantic Region ascendancy by dumping defending NJAC champion TCNJ 62-56. The Pioneers used a 14-4 run to break a 45-45 tie and pull away for their eighth win in as many tries. No. 23 UW-River Falls escaped UW-Oshkosh with its perfect record intact by nipping the Titans, 57-56. The Falcons are perched alone atop the WIAC thanks to UW-La Crosse beating UW-Platteville 68-51

Mount St. Mary and Baruch, who each went undefeated in conference play last year, hooked up for a non-conference showdown on Saturday. The Knights picked up the win over the Bearcats 65-54 behind Jess Tice's 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mount Union stayed unbeaten in conference and overall with a 78-76 overtime win over Ohio Northern on another good Saturday for all things Purple Raider. And RPI ... well ... nearly pitched a shutout, opening the game on a 56-0 run in beating Paul Smith's 67-4. Paul Smith's shot 1-for-36, had just five offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 25 times compared to RPI's five.

In other men's action No. 21 DeSales gutted out a win over St. John Fisher 64-61 despite missing preseason All-American Darnell Braswell. Photo gallery.
