Washington U. received all the No. 1 votes in this week�s poll since the ballots were cast through Monday's games. Losses by the top three teams (scroll down for more coverage) opens up room for No. 4 Randolph-Macon and No. 5 UW-Stevens Point to make their case for the top slot.
Randolph-Macon (10-0) burnished its resume by rallying from 16 down to beat No. 10 Williams at home, 79-74. Danny Jones, who scored 27 points for the Yellow Jackets, gave Randolph-Macon a 63-62 lead with under five minutes to play and Eric Pugh scored six points down the stretch to preserve the victory. UW-Stevens Point remained in the running by rallying past Viterbo 75-57.
&&g-boxr&&The O in OAC stands for ouch on Wednesday after both ranked teams lost. Medaille stunned No. 9 John Carroll at their place to improve to 11-0 with a 92-91 win. After Matt Crozier gave the Blue Streaks a 90-89 lead with 29 seconds left, Ron Malicki responded with a three-point play for the Mavericks. John Carroll had a chance to tie the game at the line but Rudy Kirbus hit only one of two and Medaille held on for the victory. Malicki finished with 21 points.
Thomas More made the short trip to No. 14 Wilmington and came home with a 92-90 victory. The Saints erased a 13-point second half deficit and the teams battled to tie scores the rest of the game. Brandon Rogers� three-pointer pulled the Quakers even at 90 a piece but Daniel Neeley dropped a jumper with six seconds left for the win. More men�s scores.
No. 7 Middlebury picked up where it left off 25 days ago by defeating RPI, 63-52. Alex Franz hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to lift No. 25 St. Mary's (Md.) over Hampden-Sydney, 70-69. Wartburg handed Division II Florida Tech its second loss of the season, 94-90.
In women's action, Wartburg rallied from a 24-3 deficit and knocked off No. 23 St. Norbert 53-50. It's the Knights' sixth consecutive win after a 1-4 start. No. 14 UW-Whitewater rallied past Edgewood 67-64 to avoid the upset on the road as Heidi Sonntag led four scorers in double figures. Christopher Newport remained undefeated, winning at home against No. 24 Randolph-Macon 78-67. More women's scores.
A scorer's table error cost Wittenberg a win at home, as a basket incorrectly credited to Case Western Reserve stood up and the Spartans eventually won 60-58. �The official story is we actually won the basketball game,� Wittenberg coach Sarah Jurewicz told the Springfield News-Sun, �but according to the official table, the book, they had it the way the final score read. Up here in the broadcast booth, the stat people, they�re really perplexed. They don�t know what to do with the final stats, because they�ve got us winning the basketball game.�
In California No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan held off Redlands 79-71 behind 27 points from Christina Solari, including 17 free throws made in 19 attempts. Solari added nine rebounds, five steals and three assists in the Titans' victory. The Bulldogs drop to 7-3 with the loss.
