No. 18 Eastern Mennonite trounced No. 1 Randolph-Macon 90-67 knocking the Yellow Jackets from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The teams played a frenetic first half that had more than a dozen lead changes and left Eastern Mennonite with a 48-42 lead at the break. Then the Runnin' Royals took over, outscoring Randolph-Macon 10-2 in the opening minutes of the second half. The Yellow Jackets brought in five fresh bodies to try to stop the run, but could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Three Royals -- Todd Phillips, D. J. Hinson and George Johnson -- accounted for 73 EMU points in the route. Phillips was particularly impressive in rolling up 26 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in just 28 minutes. EMU, whose lone loss comes to NAIA Southern Virginia, takes over first in the ODAC at 6-0. Will No. 2 UW-Stevens Point take over the top spot in the next Top 25 rankings? The Pointers took care of business against UW-Platteville as they built a 23-point halftime lead on their way to a 74-53 win. For the second consecutive Wednesday, UW-Oshkosh pushed a highly ranked conference foe but came up a little short. No. 4 UW-Whitewater held on at home to beat the Titans 62-58 in overtime. UW-River Falls led throughout its victory at No. 24 UW-La Crosse, 83-75. Wade Guerin led the Falcons, who entered the game just 1-5 in conference, with 19 points and 21 rebounds.
The last undefeated team in Division III men's basketball was Medaille, but not for very long. Pitt-Bradford knocked off the No. 19 Mavericks 68-65 mere hours after Eastern Mennonite beat Randolph-Macon. Tyler Ferguson's jumper with 15 seconds left gave Pitt-Bradford the win.
In women's action, there were few surprises at least among the Top 25 teams. The only ranked team to lose was No. 18 UW-River Falls who fell at UW-La Crosse 67-52 for their second loss in a row. Melissa Beyruti hit five three-pointers to become the NCAA Division III all-time leader in three-point field goals made and scored 18 points to lead Kean to a 63-51 win over Richard Stockton. There is an unlikely duo atop the women's MAC Freedom standings. Last year's runner-up Manhattanville is 4-0 after beating FDU-Florham 64-49. But who would've picked Misericordia to also be undefeated in conference to date? The Cougars beat DeSales at home 57-53 and will travel to Manhattanville on Saturday.
Back on the men's side, Gustavus Adolphus took over first in the MIAC by knocking off No. 5 St. Thomas 56-51 and ending the Tommies' 28-game regular season conference win streak. The Gusties are 8-0 in the MIAC and 10-3 overall with two of the losses coming to Division II opponents. Ninth-ranked MIT had its way with WPI 76-53 in a NEWMAC contest, beating its fellow Engineers for the first time since 2003. No. 21 Illinois Wesleyan defeated Millikin 75-71 to grab sole possession of first place in the CCIW. The Titans sit alone atop the standings at 3-0 after Wheaton (Ill.) beat Augustana 69-63.
Capital stopped No. 15 Wilmington's undefeated run through the OAC by beating the Quakers at their place 78-73. The Crusaders have won seven of eight after starting the season 1-5. Richard Stockton and William Paterson will enter their key Saturday clash with momentum. The Ospreys beat Kean 82-68 for their sixth consecutive win while the Pioneers turned away Rutgers-Newark 61-57 for their 12th straight win. Olivet surprised Hope at the DeVos Fieldhouse 67-64 thanks to Michael McClary's 22 points and 15 rebounds. The Comets had not won in Holland since 1994.
Back in the ODAC No. 6 Guilford tuned up for its upcoming showdown with No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan by dominating Emory and Henry 99-57. Rhett Bonner hit six three-pointers for the Quakers in the first half where Guilford outscored the Wasps 61-22. Virginia Wesleyan cranked out its 10th consecutive win in edging Hampden-Sydney 69-67. The Marlins travel to Guilford on Saturday, having beaten the Quakers at home earlier this season. Greensboro got a buzzer beater (video) that survived video review to end regulation, but couldn't hang on in overtime as Ferrum won 82-78.
