CNU coach reaches 500 mark

Christopher Newport head men's coach C.J. Woollum collected the 500th victory of his 26-year career as his Captains (13-12) defeated Greensboro, 73-60, in the first round of the USA South Tournament Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

Woollum is the first Division III men's coach in Virginia to reach the 500-win milestone.

The Captains trailed only once, near the start of the second half, when Greensboro pushed in front by two, 36-34. But CNU ran off the next 16 straight points to grab a 50-36 margin with 11:56 to play and never led by less than double-digits again.

Christopher Newport was paced by Conley Taylor with 21 points, hitting 8-10 from the floor. Theo Baker added 12 and Brian Hermann 10. Mark Blaingame, who recently went over the 1,000 rebound mark for his career, grabbed 15 boards.
