A month ago, the Mary Washington women's basketball team made a surprising statement in the Capital Athletic Conference, holding Marymount scoreless until midway through the first half and holding on for a 65-57 victory. On Wednesday night the Saints returned the favor, stifling the Eagles early and gaining a 54-38 win of their own.
&&g-boxl&&No. 7 Marymount held No. 23 Mary Washington off the scoreboard until the 10:20 mark of the first half. The Eagles rallied to draw within two before the Saints pulled away to a 10-point halftime lead. In the second half Marymount held Mary Washington to 20 percent shooting from the field (5-for-25). Margo Muhlbauer scored 22 points in Buena Vista's 79-63 win over Dubuque and needs just nine to reach the 2,000-point milestone. Swarthmore's Kathryn Stockbower passed the 1,000-rebound mark. Carissa Verkaik scored a Division III season-high 46 points in No. 11 Calvin's 93-77 win against Adrian. Capital lost to Wilmington 62-57 and lost its narrow lead over Mount Union and Baldwin-Wallace in the OAC. More women's scores.
Bridgewater (Va.) fell short in its bid to sweep crosstown rival No. 12 Eastern Mennonite. The Royals defeated the Eagles 86-81 behind Todd Phillips' double-double. Hampden-Sydney beat archrival Randolph-Macon 66-61 behind 25 points from Turner King. No. 3 St. Thomas avenged its only conference loss of the season and won its 11th game in a row, defeating Gustavus Adolphus 75-51. The Tommies have won 43 of their past 44 games against conference foes.
Not all sweep dreams were denied, however. Wheaton (Mass.) is just 9-14 and 5-6 in conference but is 2-0 against No. 11 MIT after beating the Engineers 84-77 tonight. The Lyons used a 17-0 run sandwiched around halftime to take control of the game despite Mitchell Kates scoring 24 and Noel Hollingsworth adding 21 for the Engineers. Pitt-Bradford got 21 points from Zach Moore to beat No. 24 Medaille 79-63 on the road to sweep the Mavericks in the regular season. The Panthers led by 25 with six minutes remaining. The latest regional rankings have Hope atop the Great Lakes, but that may not last long. Adrian defeated the Flying Dutchmen 73-68. Playing its fourth game in six nights, Johns Hopkins earned its biggest win of the year, a 46-45 win at No. 15 Franklin and Marshall. No. 18 Anderson clinched home court for the HCAC tournament by rolling over Manchester 83-64. Wabash wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the NCAC playoffs with a 72-69 win at Wittenberg. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps clinched the top seed in the SCIAC tournament with a 67-54 win against Whittier and Redlands' 72-61 loss to Cal Lutheran. and No. 9 UW-Whitewater remained tied atop the WIAC with wins against UW-Platteville and UW-Oshosh.
