Eastern Mennonite made its splash on the national scene on a Wednesday night back in January with a big upset -- a win against then-No. 1 Randolph-Macon. The Royals recently ran into trouble on the road with losses at Bridgewater (Va.) and Hampden-Sydney. But tonight the Royals ran over No. 1 Guilford 90-63. Eastern Mennonite never trailed and turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 30-point bulge with eight minutes play. Todd Phillips poured in 27 points along with five rebounds and five assists for the Royals. Tyler Sanborn notched another double-double (21 points, 13 rebounds) for the Quakers.
No. 19 Wooster won the NCAC regular season title outright with a victory at Hiram 69-50 and will host the conference semifinals and finals if it advances. No. 13 Anderson grabbed a share of the HCAC title by beating Rose-Hulman 76-69. Most games on the east coast were wiped out by yet another snow storm. Check out Wednesday night men's scoreboard.
&&f-boxr&&Wednesday night's marquee women's match up between No. 11 Carthage and Elmhurst did not disappoint. Then Katie Klemke saved the day for the Lady Reds by banking in a 40-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to give Carthage a dramatic 85-84 victory. More women's scores.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it was Pink Zone night for the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. How does a pink, blue and gold color scheme look? Mount Union knocked off Baldwin-Wallace on the road 81-78. The win pulls the Purple Raiders into a two-way tie for second place in the OAC with the Yellow Jackets, both of whom sit a half game behind Capital.
In other men's games, Andy Grzesiak-Grimm led Augsburg with his third double-double as the Auggies posted a convincing 78-63 win against St. John's. That win, combined with Gustavus Adolphus' loss at St. Olaf and Hamline's loss at St. Mary's (Minn.) put Augsburg into a tie for second in the MIAC and in line for a first-round bye. St. Thomas guard Tyler Nicolai had 14 of his 18 points in the first half and the No. 4-ranked Tommies wrapped up the outright MIAC championship with a 78-55 victory against Bethel.
St. Norbert scored just two points in the final 3:51 but had enough left defensively to hold on 77-72 against Ripon and clinch the Midwest Conference top seed and hosting rights. Central shot 0-for-13 from three-point range but rallied past Loras 69-59. The win, combined with Simpsons 83-80 upset of Buena Vista gives the Dutch the outright IIAC title, the first for Coach Mike Boschee, who inherited a 5-21 club when he took over in 2003-04.
