Washington U. won its fifth Division III women's basketball national championship by defeating Hope 65-59 in front of a full Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
For Jaimie McFarlin and the Bears' seniors, this one is particularly sweet after losing in the national finals in 2007 and 2009. McFarlin had 17 points and 15 rebounds while Alex Hoover scored a career high 18.
Washington U. held Hope to 19 percent shooting in the first half (6-for-31) and took a 24-20 lead into the locker room. The Flying Dutch rallied to take a 27-26 lead when Philana Greene stole the ball and fed Carrie Snikkers for the score. The teams traded leads until the Bears went on a 12-2 run capped by two McFarlin jumpers to seize control. Hope cut the lead to three and had a chance to tie the game at 46 but Jenny Cowen's three rimmed in and out.
Hoover scored 10 points in the final three minutes for the Bears. Snikkers finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Greene scored 18.
McFarlin was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She's joined by teammate Zoe Unruh, Snikkers, Amherst's Sarah Leyman and Rochester's Melissa Alwardt on the All Tournament team. McFarlin also finished her career tied for the Division III all-time record for games played at 128. She shares that mark witlh Kean's Melissa Beyruti, who set the record in last weekend's sectional final.
Before the title game, we announced the 2010 D3hoops.com women's basketball All-American team and national award winners. Snikkers was named Player of the Year, Carissa Verkaik of rival Calvin the Rookie of the Year and Nancy Fahey of Washington U. the Coach of the Year.
Amherst led Rochester from tip to finish in the consolation game and won, 56-44.
