Illinois Wesleyan ended Washington U's quest for a third straight national championship and made a wide-open Division III NCAA Tournament in men's basketball even more so by beating the Bears in St. Louis 75-70. With the Titans leading by three and 17 seconds left, Jordan Zimmer missed a free throw but Doug Sexauer grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. His free throws iced the Titans' victory.
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference advanced three teams to the Sweet 16 as Guilford, Eastern Mennonite and Randolph-Macon won their second round matchups. St. Mary's (Md.) denied the ODAC a fourth victory when the No. 13 Seahawks, playing at home, held off No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan 72-69. Saturday night's men's second-round scores.
Texas-Dallas edged Wheaton (Ill.) 63-62 thanks to two huge plays late. Jordan Eppink scored with five seconds left to give the Comets the lead and Curtis Davis stole the Thunder's inbound pass to preserve it. Texas-Dallas had a first-round bye, along with victorious Williams. The third bye team, Whitworth, beat Chapman handily after jumping out to a 25-4 lead.
The clock struck midnight for two of Friday night's Cinderellas. DeSales blasted Albertus Magnus 82-49 behind another big night for Darnell Braswell (27 points, 13 rebounds). The Bulldogs earned a rematch with Randolph-Macon who defeated Clark 70-60. The Cougars lost leading scorer Mark Alexander to a knee injury in the opening minute but still hung tough. The Yellow Jackets pulled away by making 22 of 28 free throws in the second half.
Terrell Hollins scored 16 points and had a career-high 21 rebounds as Brandeis won at No. 25 St. John Fisher, 66-52. Brandeis used just six players. Rhode Island College finished a great trip to Vermont by knocking off Middlebury 75-59. The Anchormen scored 11 of the game's first 12 points and never trailed. NESCAC champion Williams defeated Maine-Farmington 83-63. SUNYIT nipped Medaille 64-63, making the Wildcats the last team standing from the East region. Franklin and Marshall packed Merchant Marine's gym and came out of Long Island with a win, 73-64.
Carthage joined its CCIW rival in the Sweet 16 as Steve Djurickovic scored 30 points and dished out 10 assists in a 76-58 win against Anderson. The Redmen will face Illinois Wesleyan on Friday night in a rematch of the CCIW tournament final. UW-Stevens Point finished a weekend of winning ugly by defeating St. Norbert 63-48. And UW-Whitewater nearly came all the way back for the second night in a row, but fell to Wooster 87-78.
