A Frostburg State men's basketball player was shot and killed and another was wounded in an attack early Sunday morning just off the school's campus in western Maryland.
On April 18, at approximately 4 a.m., local police were called to the scene, where Brandon Carroll and Ellis Hartridge Jr. were found suffering from gunshot wounds. Carroll was pronounced dead at an area hospital, while Ellis underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
The suspect, Tyrone Hall, is also a Frostburg State student and is in custody.
"The range of emotions is varied," coach Webb Hatch told The Baltimore Sun. "You're talking about men ranging from age 19 to 22, most of whom have not experienced the loss of a peer. ... A couple of the kids are really struggling, but I've got a pretty good feeling that they're all very much in touch. They have a tendency to look out for each other."
"I wish to offer my deepest condolences to the family of Brandon Carroll," university president Jonathan Gibralter said in a statement. "The entire University Community is behind them during this incredibly tragic time. We will feel the impact of his loss for a very long time. I am also very relieved that Mr. Hartridge will recover, but am so sorry that he has had to endure this. I am also most grateful to those police officers who were on duty and who acted so quickly to resolve the situation. It will be important for our community to pull together in the coming days."
Investigators learned that there had been a confrontation at an
off-campus party earlier that evening where it is alleged that a
subject assaulted a female attending the party. That confrontation
quickly ended when it was broken up by other subjects attending the
party.
Later, several subjects went to the residence of the person alleged
to have assaulted the female. There was another confrontation, and
then the suspect produced a 12 gauge shotgun. The suspect fired two
rounds, striking both of the victims in the abdominal area. The
suspect then fled back into his residence and remained there until
law enforcement arrived and he was detained.
Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence. They recovered the 12 gauge shotgun believed to have been used during the incident, as well as numerous rounds of shotgun shells and other evidence.
Hall is being charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, and two counts of first degree assault.
