No. 11 Randolph-Macon extended its winning streak to eight by beating No. 14 Eastern Mennonite 83-78. The Yellow Jackets swept the regular season series from the Royals and kept pace with No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC race.
Danny Jones keyed Randolph-Macon's victory by scoring 26 points and grabbing eight rebounds in 16 minutes of action. The Yellow Jackets built a six point lead in the final minute, but Eastern Mennonite erased that deficit and tied the game at 78 with 26 seconds left. Randolph-Macon then hit five three throws to pull away for the win. George Johnson had 15 points for the Royals, 10 of which came in the game's closing minutes. Randolph-Macon improves to 4-1 in conference while Eastern Mennonite sags to 2-3.
No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan stayed one step in front of Randolph-Macon in the ODAC standings by fighting off Randolph, 53-50. After Virginia Wesleyan erased a nine point deficit in the first half, the two teams played nip and tuck the rest of the night. The Marlins shut out the Wildcats for the final 4:18 and seized the lead for good on a Tre' Ford layup. Randolph hung close despite notching just three assists against 18 turnovers.
Nick Allen converted two free throws with four seconds left to lift UW-Platteville over No. 9 UW-Stevens Point 57-56. The victory lifted the Pioneers to .500 in WIAC play. The Pioneers have won six in a row following a five game losing streak. Meanwhile, No. 12 UW-River Falls defeated UW-La Crosse 89-83 to widen its conference lead.
No. 8 Augustana took care of Wheaton (Ill.) 70-57 in a game that wasn't even as close as the final score indicated. The Vikings led by 20 at the half and used 14 players in the victory. No. 17 St. Mary's (Md.) hammered Mary Washington 91-65 to give the Eagles their first conference loss and take over first place in the CAC. The usual duo of Alex Franz and Sam Borum powered the Seahawks with a combined 33 points, 19 rebounds and nine assists. The Eagles shot just 34 percent (21-for-62) in the loss.
Capital forged a tie for first place atop the OAC by beating Marietta on the road 82-74. Scott Robertson had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders while the Pioneers shot 15 percent (three-for-20) from behind the arc. Antone Byrd and Chris Davis each scored 30 points as UW-Whitewater survived in double overtime at UW-Oshkosh 89-87.
On one side of the MAC, Alvernia claimed sole possession of first place in the Commonwealth with a 62-51 victory at Arcadia. On the Freedom side, King's handed Delaware Valley its first conference loss 80-74. Webster topped Washington U. 63-61 behind Willie Trimble's 22 points.
