Bryant Voiles scored 17, Brian DeSimone 15 and Kyle Nelson added 14, including the game-winning basket with two seconds left to lift No. 3 Augustana past No. 20 Illinois Wesleyan 69-67.
The win means Augustana remains unbeaten, one of five teams in Division III men's basketball.
On a night where many games got postponed, the Top 25 games were few.
Jake Voeltz took over in the final 10 minutes, scoring 11 of his game-high 23 points in that stretch to lift No. 10 UW-River Falls to a 62-59 home win against UW-Superior. The Falcons improve to 17-2, 10-0 in the WIAC.
No. 12 UW-Stevens Point kept pace, although at a distance, winning 85-59 at UW-Whitewater. Jerrel Harris shot 8-for-12 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point range to lead the Pointers, who remain two games back of the Falcons in the WIAC standings.
A cold-shooting second half by Wabash and a stellar effort by Ohio Wesleyan's Tim Brady sent the No. 11 Little Giants to their third loss in North Coast Athletic Conference basketball play with an 87-76 road defeat. Top-ranked Wooster remained unbeaten atop the NCAC with a big win against Kenyon.
Anderson moved into first place in the HCAC with an 85-56 win against Defiance, coupled with Hanover's 77-67 loss at Transylvania.
Will Bowser outdueled Joe Prepolec 46-40 and his Hope Flying Dutchmen beat Kalamazoo 100-96 in overtime to keep Hope alone atop the MIAA. Calvin kept pace a game behind with an 81-50 win against Albion. Michael McClary scored 28 points and became Olivet's all-time scoring leader in the Comets' 74-61 win over Alma.
Wednesday's women's wrapup
In women’s action, Hamline upset No. 20 St. Benedict 77-58
to snap the Blazers’ 10-game winning streak. The Pipers shot
53 percent from three (8-for-15) and had six players reach
double-digit scoring. Mary Wilkowski led Hamline with 14 points and
12 rebounds. Hamline is just 6-11, 5-9 in conference but the Pipers
have played conference leader St. Benedict well. They lost by two
at St. Benedict earlier this season.
No. 7 UW-Stevens Point topped No. 9 UW-Whitewater 66-47 to sweep the regular season series and solidify its hold on first place in the WIAC. The Pointers used a 12-0 run to build a 33-18 lead, withstood a short Warhawks’ rally and then pushed the lead back to double-digits for the rest of the game. Britta Petersen and Ashley Averkamp combined for 36 points and 19 rebounds for UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers are 10-0 in conference while the Warhawks slip to 7-2.
In other Top 25 games, No. 5 Babson stayed undefeated with ease by beating Wheaton (Mass.) 74-53. Nicki Wurdeman had 22 points, seven boards and four blocks for the Beavers. No. 25 Medaille took over sole possession of first place in the AMCC with a 75-64 win over Pitt-Bradford. The Lady Mavericks outscored the Panthers 44-24 in the paint.
Outside the Top 25, Julie McGrory hit game-tying shots to force single and double-overtime where Gettysburg finally prevailed over Dickinson 71-63. The Bullets have won eight of their past nine games in the Centennial Conference after starting conference play 1-3. Hanover took care of Transylvania 87-71 to stay two games ahead of the Pioneers in the HCAC standings. Torin Franz scored 28 points for the Panthers. Franklin remained two games back of Hanover with a 60-47 win at Rose-Hulman.
