Not so fast

Maggie Ely and NYU picked up their second win over a Top 25 ranked team this year.

It's been rough going lately for NYU, so the Violets will certainly savor Friday night's victory over No. 12 Rochester, 82-69.

NYU entered Friday night's game just 3-5 in 2011 and 2-3 in conference. But the Violets roared out to a 46-22 halftime lead over visiting Rochester. NYU pushed the lead to 26 early in the second half and led by double digits for most of the second half. The Violets were a sparkling 22-for-23 from the free throw line in the second half. Maggie Ely scored 20 points for NYU and Tana Bertino contributed 18 off the bench. NYU pushed its record in conference to .500 and knocked Rochester three games behind UAA leader and thirteenth ranked Chicago. Taylor Simpson notched a double-double in the first half alone and the Maroons rolled past Case Western 81-61.

All other ranked women's teams won thier Friday night games. No. 8 Washington U. extended its home winning streak to 39 games with a 61-39 win over Carnegie Mellon. No. 16 DePauw cruised past Colorado College 90-60 for its 60th consecutive home victory in the SCAC. No. 2 Amherst handled Colby 82-60 and hosts Bowdoin on Saturday.

Outside the Top 25, Union topped arch rival RPI 61-58 on an Amy Loya three pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime. The Dutchwomen have a one game lead in the Liberty League standings. Geneseo State beat Brockport State 61-52 for the Blue Knights' 11th consecutive win. George Fox survived a scare from Pacific Lutheran with a 68-65 overtime win. Men's action

St. Lawrence went on the road and beat Hobart 80-77 in overtime, ending the Statesmen's undefeated run through Liberty League. Hobart's Blair Helton hit pressure packed free throws with 34 seconds left in regulation to tie game at 67. Ralph Temgoua scored six points for St. Lawrence in overtime and finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 43 minutes. Garrett Sharlow contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints.

Merchant Marine also ended Scranton's undefeated conference run but in far less dramatic fashion. The Mariners defeated the Royals 86-66. That victory could be critical in tie breaking scenarios, especially since the Landmark Conference has six teams within two games of each other for the last two playoff spots. Drew won its sixth straight with a dramatic 99-96 triple-overtime over Moraivan. Asmar Capers had 29 points, hit the final go ahead jumper and played 54 of 55 minutes for the Rangers.

No. 23 Lewis and Clark's big game against No. 2 Whitworth on Saturday night just got a lot bigger for the Pioneers. They fell at Whitman 80-70 and slip two games behind the Pirates in the NWC standings. Whitman outrebounded Lewis and Clark 49-31.  Meanwhile Whitworth rolled over Linfield 70-43.

Chris Dende only needed 14 minutes and seven field goal attempts to score 17 points and lead Rochester over NYU 67-65.  The Yellowjackets (13-4, 5-1 in the UAA) take over sole possession of first place in their conference because Brandeis beat visiting Emory (13-4, 4-2) 86-82 in overtime.
