Elizabethtown was once the top-ranked team in the NCAA's Mid-Atlantic Region poll. Now the Blue Jays won't even make the MAC Commonwealth tournament, as Arcadia snaps a two-year-plus conference losing streak.
Arcadia won 85-84 for its first conference win after 32 consecutive defeats and Elizabethtown is done at 16-8, 7-7 MACC, having lost five of its last six games.
Glenn Robinson and Mac Petty each had their courts named after them today. For Robinson, it came after a Franklin and Marshall loss to Dickinson, while Petty's honor came with a 72-42 Wabash thrashing of Oberlin. Dickinson ends up the No. 2 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs, behind F&M.
Carleton finished regulation on a 16-6 run to force overtime, then continued the run in the extra period, pulling away from crosstown rival St. Olaf 84-73. The win clinched the top seed in the MIAC tournament for the Knights. Carleton gets the top seed by virtue of having swept Hamline in the regular-season series. St. Thomas will be the No. 2 seed after rallying from a second-half deficit to win at archrival St. John's. It's the sixth consecutive year in which St. Thomas has won a share of the MIAC title.
Landon Gamble scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as North Central upset No. 3 Augustana in a low-scoring battle, 50-46. The win moves the Cardinals, who are just 15-10 overall, within half a game of the Vikings for the top spot in the CCIW. Augustana finishes the regular season Tuesday at Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton (Ill.) clinched a spot in the four-team tournament with a 78-49 win against Elmhurst.
Tony Mane set a school record for points in a season but it wasn't enough as UW-La Crosse fell to No. 6 UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers will be the top seed in the upcoming WIAC tournament. Mane was 12-for-21 from the field en route to 32 points and has scored 633 on the season. UW-Stevens Point won't have to share the conference title, either, as No. 12 UW-River Falls lost its third consecutive game, falling 62-58 at UW-Platteville in overtime. UW-Whitewater clinched a first-round home game by beating UW-Superior 79-63.
Delaware Valley beat Eastern 66-60 and got the top seed in the MAC Freedom playoffs when FDU-Florham upset DeSales 74-70. Delaware Valley will host Wilkes in the first home playoff game in the program's history, while DeSales will host Misericordia. Danny Ciprut had a Senior Day to remember for the Devils, scoring 20 points and hendecatupling his season scoring total. (That's the word for 11 times something.)
No. 17 Wittenberg fell to a stunning defeat, getting rolled at Hiram 87-65. Babajide Eniola and Andrew Weigand with 15 points apiece off the bench for the Terriers. The loss, combined with No. 5 Wooster's 81-72 win against Ohio Wesleyan, gives Wooster the top seed in the NCAC tournament.
No. 14 Eastern Mennonite did what a couple of ranked teams have failed to do this season, winning at Guilford. D.J. Hinson took over after regulation, leading the Running Royals to an 84-82 win in double overtime. Kevin Knab scored a career-high 31 points, including a 3-pointer as time expired to lift No. 13 Marietta past John Carroll 82-81.
Lebanon Valley defeated Alvernia on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Anthony Trautman to end overtime with a 64-62 win. Watch the highlight, with Dave McHugh on the call for D3sports.com.
Hobart wrapped up the top seed in the Liberty League tournament with an 86-69 win against Vassar. The Statesmen share first place with RPI but win the tiebreaker. Gustavus Adolphus coach Mark Hanson won his 400th career game as the Gusties defeated St. Mary's (Minn.) 89-78. The Gusties travel to St. Olaf on Wednesday night for a MIAC semifinal.
Conference tournaments
The NESCAC men's tournament went by the seedings,
with Williams, Middlebury, Amherst and Trinity (Conn.) all
advancing to the conference semifinals. They won't take place until
next Saturday, with Williams hosting.
In the NJAC, New Jersey City kept its season alive, holding off Rowan 75-72 to advance to the semifinals and face Kean on Tuesday night. Four players led the way with 12 points apiece for the Gothic Knights. Richard Stockton was knocked out in the other half of the bracket, falling to Montclair State. The Red Hawks go on to Ramapo for the semis.
