Salem State sacks Williams

Justin Nieves led Salem State with 29 points in the Viking's big win at Williams.

Salem State did something on Saturday that no New England team outside of the NESCAC had done since 2008. The Vikings beat Williams.

After a back-and-forth first half, Salem State used an 8-0 run to seize control of the game in the second half. The Vikings defense took over from there, holding the Ephs to 17 points in the final 13-plus minutes. Justin Nieves scored 29 points on seven three-pointers. Williams played without two of its guards due to injury.

Defending national champions St. Thomas continued its west coast road trip with a dramatic win at Pomona-Pitzer 82-79 in double-overtime. Tommy Hannon scored a layup with 11 seconds left in regulation to pull the Tommies even at 64. Will DeBerg had 20 points and five steals in 37 minutes for St. Thomas.

Mount St. Joseph knocked off No. 20 Centre 54-49. Peter Lynch shot 9-for-10 from the floor to lead No. 5 Middlebury past Gwynedd-Mercy 76-70 at the Ramapo Tip-Off Tournament. The Panthers play host Ramapo tomorrow afternoon.

Outside the Top 25, Gettysburg played its third straight overtime game to start the season. This time the Bullets won, downing Drew 62-58. William Paterson and Stevens went three overtimes before the Pioneers prevailed 112-107. William Paterson erased a 23-point second half deficit and Corey Chandler notched 28 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in 50 minutes. Think that's impressive? Women's action

Sarah Condra was named the MVP of Franklin's Tip-Off Tournament.

Franklin rallied to upset No. 10 DePauw 52-47 and win its own Tip-Off Tournament. The Grizzlies trailed for most of the second half until Sarah Condra's three pointer gave Franklin a 47-45 lead with 1:39 left. Savannah Trees answered for DePauw to tie the game. Then Condra hit another three with 30 seconds left to give her 25 points on the night and Franklin the victory.

Defending champion Amherst tipped off its season by pounding the glass and pounding Norwich, 90-38. The Lord Jeffs outrebounded the Cadets 65-31.

No. 5 Babson defeated Tufts 73-64 behind a big night for the big three players in the Beavers' front court. Kathleen King, Nicki Wurdeman, and Sarah Collins combined to score 58 points and grab 32 rebounds. April Smith scored 27 points for the second consecutive game and No. 4 William Paterson beat Moravian 71-65.

No. 24 St. Vincent won the first game of the season between ranked women's teams. The Bearcats stopped No. 22 Messiah 67-62 on the Falcons' home court. Brittany Sedlock scored 18 in the victory.

Outside the Top 25, Juniata stopped DeSales 59-43 in a battle of 2011 NCAA tournament teams. Beth Suggs sank a free throw with 1.6 seconds left to lift University of New England past Rhode Island College 63-62. Just like the Monmouth football team, the Scots women's basketball team won on the road in overtime. Monmouth defeated Central 72-69 in Iowa.
