Four on the floor

Chad Burridge and Oswego State could return to the Top 25 after Saturday's win.

Brandeis' victory over No. 2 Amherst headlined a list of upsets on the busiest Saturday before the holiday break. Four teams in the Top 25 fell to unranked opponents while No. 4 Augustana and No. 25 Wabash defeated ranked foes.

Brandeis rode the hot shooting of Ben Bartoldus past Amherst in the Judges' 76-61 victory. Bartoldus scored 11 points in the opening seven minutes of the second half to give Brandeis a 13-point lead on the visiting Lord Jeffs. Brandeis shot 52 percent from the field (26-for-50) and evened its record at 5-5. Amherst shot 37 percent (22-for-59) and slipped to 8-1.

Oswego State held No. 14 Buffalo State to its lowest scoring total of the season in a 85-71 win. The Lakers led from tip to finish and stand alone atop the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Manhattanville held of No. 22 William Paterson 83-80 to deal the Pioneers their first loss of the season. Armani Blackmon tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Valiants, who improve to 4-5.

For the second Saturday in a row, Washington U. defeated a ranked CCIW opponent. This time the Bears dumped No. 17 Wheaton (Ill.) 77-68 behind 25 points from Dylan Richter and 19 points for Alex Toth.

No. 4 Augustana held off No. 21 UW-Stevens Point 69-64 despite 29 points for Tyler Tillema. Luke Scarnata's jumper with 11:17 remaining put the Vikings ahead to stay. Augustana went 10 for 12 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold the Pointers at arm's length. The Vikings improve to 7-1.

Aaron Zinnerman poured in 25 points and No. 25 Wabash defeated No. 4 Wooster 72-58. Following Wednesday's loss to Wittenberg, this is the first time the Scots have dropped two straight since 1996. The Little Giants are 8-0, 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

No. 24 Rochester defeated former head coach Mike Neer and his unbeaten Hobart Statesmen 72-62. John DiBartolomeo scored 18 points for the Yellowjackets who finish the first semester with an 8-2 record.

The last time Catholic started 8-0, Calvin Coolidge was President.

Outside the Top 25, Washington and Jefferson beat Westminster (Pa.) 65-63 at the buzzer three nights after losing to Thomas More in the same fashion. It wasn't quite a buzzer beater, but a long three pointer from Will Schlosser with 4.8 seconds left tasted just as sweet for Elizabethtown. The Bluejays upended Scranton 60-59 on Schlosser's bomb.

Ben Wisniewski scored 34 points and Edgewood beat Benedictine 84-71 to improve to 9-0 for the first time since 1976-77Catholic is 8-0 for the first time since 1927 after beating Richard Stockton 72-65. Eastern Connecticut State stopped a seven game slide against Rhode Island College by dumping the Anchormen 70-59.
