The list of unbeaten men's and women's teams shrunk throughout a full Thursday. On the men's side, Illinois Wesleyan edged Bethany and Dickinson beat Medaille in overtime. UW-Whitewater dealt the Concordia (Texas) women their first loss.
Illinois Wesleyan built a 59-52 lead on Bethany with 53 seconds left before the Bison mounted their comeback. Reece Mabery hit a three-pointer and then added a layup after an Illinois Wesleyan free throw to narrow the Titans' lead to 60-57. Jordan Zimmerman's layup pushed Illinois Wesleyan's lead back to five but Mabery hit another three to draw Bethany within two with two seconds left. The Titan successfully inbounded the ball and Stephen Rudnicki hit one of two free throws to ice the game, 63-60. Bethany slips to 10-1 while Illinois Wesleyan improves to 8-2.
Dickinson surprised Medaille 75-72 in overtime at St. John Fisher's tournament. Dickinson's Adam Honig hit a three with two seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime where Dickinson picked up the win.
After midnight in much of the country, Gustavus Adolphus knocked off previously unbeaten Transylvania 66-62 at the D3hoops.com Classic. Tyler Grey made his only field goal of the night count for the Golden Gusties with a late three-pointer from the corner to put Gustavus Adolphus ahead for good. Seth Anderson finished with 24 points for the Golden Gusties, who also dealt Hardin-Simmons their first loss of the season on Wednesday night.
Unbeaten and top-ranked Middlebury rolled over Curry 83-54. Tomorrow the Panthers face Salem State, which beat Williams earlier this season. Other ranked teams that kept their record perfect include No. 5 Emory, No. 10 Cabrini and No. 11 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Other unbeatens also kept their runs going. Lycoming turned 26 Penn State-Behrend turnovers into 37 points in a 65-58 win. The Warriors are 10-0, tied for the best start in school history. Hartwick defeated Penn State-Abington 104-90 behind Jared Suderley's 28 points. The Hawks are 11-0.
No. 15 Hope stayed unbeaten against Division III opponents with a 84-73 win over No. 20 Marietta. Peter Bunn and David Krombeen led the way for the Flying Dutchmen with 18 and 15 points respectively. Kevin Knabb had 20 for the Pioneers.
Houston Hodges' driving layup in the closing seconds saved the day for No. 14 Wabash as Hodges shot sent the game to overtime where the Little Giants defeated Franklin, 75-68. James Wang played hero for No. 7 Williams at Thomas More. The All-American was fouled on a three-point shot with the Ephs down one point with 0.3 seconds left. He hit all three shots to lift the Ephs over Thomas More 66-64.
Women's action
UW-Whitewater cooled off red-hot Concordia (Texas) by dealing the Tornados their first loss of the season, 64-61. With her team trailing late, Concordia's Lashanda Luckey scored four points in the final minute to tie the game at 59. Whitewater made its free throws to regain the lead and Steff Glynn blocked Luckey's potential game-tying shot to preserve the Warhawks' victory.
Another unbeaten fell when Carthage won a thriller over No. 14 UW-River Falls 75-68 in overtime at the D3hoops.com classic in Las Vegas. No. 18 Juniata held off Misericordia 69-68 with Ashton Banks scoring 23 points for the Eagles, who are now 10-1. Case Western nipped No. 24 Otterbein 75-74 as Erin Hollinger notched 20 points and six boards for the Spartans.
