Milwaukee School of Engineering senior center Carol Cayo grabbed her 1,000th career rebound early in the second half as the Engineers defeated Rockford 53-41 Tuesday night in Rockford, Ill. Cayo already owns the Northern Athletics Conference and MSOE career records for rebounding. She now has 1,002 rebounds during her time as a Raider.
Cayo is the first player for either men’s or women’s basketball to reach the 1,000-rebound mark in the NATHC.
Cayo is also the all-time leader in blocked shots (269) in NAC and MSOE history. She was named First Team All-NAC the past two seasons and was selected NAC Freshman of the Year during the 2008-09 season. Cayo was picked to the Capital One Women’s Basketball College Division Academic All-America Second Team for the 2010-11 campaign.
During Tuesday’s game, Cayo led all scorers with 22 points and also paced all players with 12 rebounds. Cayo blocked five shots and recorded six steals. Senior guard Kathleen Collingbourne and senior forward Jamie Janczak each had six points for the Raiders. MSOE went on a 10-1 run with 4:07 left in the game to close out the Regents. Rockford went 0-for-9 from three-point range and shot 30% from the field.
