big shots down the stretch as Amherst rallied to win at

Top-ranked Amherst survived its NESCAC weekend in Maine with its unbeaten record and winning streak intact, but needed some last-minute heroics to do it in a 51-50 win at Colby.
Amherst scored eight of the last 10 points of the game, and Caroline Stedman scored 14 for the Lord Jeffs, who improved to 17-0 and have won 36 consecutive games.
The MIAA race is a lot more interesting after Saturday's results. Albion upset No. 12 Hope 63-46 at the DeVos field house to pick up its 11th straight win. Patty Rewa notched her ninth double-double of the season for the Britons with 19 points and 11 boards. Hope shot 6-for-37 from three.
No. 4 Calvin nearly met the same fate, but the Knights held off Adrian 55-52. Calvin led 49-40 with 6:15 left but only scored six more points the rest of the way. Carissa Verkaik finished with 24 points for Calvin, which improves to 17-0, 9-0 in conference.
In the battle for first place in the CCIW, No. 25 Illinois Wesleyan ran past Elmhurst 75-56. The Titans built a double-digit lead early in the game and led by 22 at the half. Olivia Lett scored 22 for Illinois Wesleyan, which has won 10 in a row. No. 24 St. Thomas beat St. Mary's (Minn.) 56-49 for its 15th consecutive win.
No. 14 Muhlenberg rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat Washington College 60-57. Alexandra Chili scored a game-high 21. The Mules remain a half game behind Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays topped Dickinson 56-44.
No. 13 Juniata punished Scranton 71-48 behind 58.1 percent shooting in the second half. No. 22 Piedmont continued its slide by falling to Maryville (Tenn.) 45-41. The Lions have dropped three of their last four games.
The top four teams in the WIAC faced off on Saturday afternoon. No. 16 UW-Eau Claire finished the game on a 21-6 run to get past UW-La Crosse 49-36. Ellen Plendl recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win. No. 15 UW-Stevens Point used a 13-1 run to pull away from No. 17 UW-River Falls 71-59. The Pointers split the season series with the Falcons and are now one game ahead of them in the standings.
No. 19 Kean scored 23 straight points in the second half to erase a double-digit deficit in defeating Rutgers-Newark 80-70. It's Kean's first game since coach Michele Sharp was fired.

Outside the Top 25, Louisiana College stayed hot with a home win over Texas-Dallas 64-54. The Wildcats were outrebounded by nine but benefited from 32 Comet turnovers. Melody Criswell scored 12 for Louisiana College which has won 12 of its last 13.
Eastern Mennonite improved to 13-1 with a 75-55 home win against Washington and Lee. The Royals are in a three-way tie atop the ODAC but have played just three non-conference games so far, beating Stevenson (6-11), York, N.Y. (1-14) and Shenandoah (5-11). Brooklyn knocked off CUNYAC champion Baruch 64-48 to improve to 6-0 in conference.
Merchant Marine freshman Demi Vanderwal put on a free throw shooting exposition at Goucher. She hit 20-of-21 attempts, including the game winner as the Mariners outlasted the Gophers 68-67 in double overtime. Vanderwal's nine free throws accounted for all of Merchant Marine's scoring in double overtime.
Katlin Michaels' buzzer beater lifted King's over Manhattanville 51-49. The Monarchs are 13-1 and 6-0 in the MAC Freedom, one game in front of DeSales. The Bulldogs defeated Eastern 45-41.
