Friday's wrap: One rivalry down

Aaron Toomey scored the game-winning basket with less than two seconds remaining and Amherst defeated archrival Williams 80-78 in front of a packed house at Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium.

Taylor Barrise led all scorers with 21 points and Toomey finished with 18 and five assists as Amherst improved to 21-2, 9-0 in the NESCAC.

The Lord Jeffs remain tied for first in the NESCAC with Middlebury, which rolled past Trinity (Conn.) 76-47. Ryan Sharry led the Panthers with 19.

No. 23 Emory avenged its road loss with a 73-70 win against No. 16 NYU. No. 10 Birmingham-Southern got balanced scoring (16 from Zac Richards and 10 from Colin Henry, Jason Jonus and Kevin Kegarise) in an 81-64 win against Centre.

Hobart ended with a 19-8 run to post a 60-49 Liberty League victory over Skidmore. Stefan Thompson logged a game-high 23 points and Matt Pebole added a double-double to pace the Statesmen. Simon Smith had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lift Stevens past St. John Fisher 70-56. The Ducks improved to 19-4, 10-2 in the Empire 8. Geneseo State rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to defeat Buffalo State 84-82 behind Ryan Riefenhauser's 24 points and 14 rebounds. No. 18 Oswego State won at Oneonta 68-55 to remain unbeaten in the SUNYAC.

Friday's women's action

The No. 23 Centre women's 16-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Birmingham-Southern as the Colonels fell behind early and eventually dropped a 72-60 decision to the Panthers. Birmingham-Southern shot 12-for-22 from three-point range.

Top-ranked Amherst defeated Williams 77-55, and No. 2 Chicago and No. 3 George Fox remained unbeaten as well. The Maroons rolled past Carnegie Mellon 95-46 as Hannah Ballard scored 20 points in 17 minutes off the bench, while the Bruins defeated Puget Sound 77-56.

No. 12 Wash U. hit eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to get past Case Western Reserve 59-50 in St. Louis. The Bears rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit.

Chelsea Leeder's layup left her hand as time expired to give Southwestern an 80-79 win to take a half-game lead over Colorado College for the top spot in the SCAC West.

Cydni Matsuoka scored 24 points to lead Vassar to its first sweep of Clarkson since 2000-01 with a 67-55 win. Freshman guard Jo Vincents scored nine of Hartwick's last 11 points as the Hawks hung on for a 56-53 victory over Nazareth. It's the Hawks' 19th win in the past 20 games, clinching their first 20-win season since 1996-97.
